On February 23, 2018, the exhibition “Ernst Barlach – Käthe Kollwitz: Beyond the Borders of Existence” was formally opened by the German Ambassador, Ernst Reichel, in National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kiev. With more than 160 works by both artists, this exhibition is the largest and most significant presentation of German Expressionist art in Ukraine. For the first time in more than 100 years, Ernst Barlach’s sculptures are also being returned to their artistic starting point: In 1906, Ernst Barlach traveled for two months to Kiev and Kharkiv, where he visited his brother. This journey had shaped the artist’s entire oeuvre until his death in 1938.
